Special Details: Another nice day on Tuesday! Enjoy, because the heat returns Wednesday through Friday. A high in the upper levels of the atmosphere (the summertime anticyclone) will set up shop in the Oklahoma Panhandle over the next few days. This will crank up the heat in the plains, but we are right on the edge. We’ll heat up, but as is often the case, we see thunderstorms form along the periphery of this feature, putting the Kansas City area in line for overnight thunderstorms as complexes roll out of the high plains. A couple weeks ago, our heat was held somewhat in check from similar thunderstorm complexes. Unfortunately, this rain-cooled air also contained more moisture. As a result, the cooler temperatures didn’t make a huge difference with the added humidity. I expect us to see slightly cooler air again this time, but given that it’s a couple weeks later, the magnitude of their influence remains to be seen.
I’m also seeing indications that we’ll have a cold front pass on Saturday, putting an end to the mini-heat wave. I still expect a hot second half of July ahead!
