4 years ago today

Today marks the four-year anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina on Louisiana and Mississippi coasts. One story that always comes to mind at this time of year is one of former WWL-TV New Orleans meteorologist John Gumm (this story re-posted from October 10, 2005). John is a former classmate of mine from Valparaiso University and simply a great guy. He went through an incredible experience in New Orleans which ultimately included the birth of his son a little over 24 hours prior to the landfall of the hurricane (An event timed just right that ensured both he and his family were safe from the storm).

Here’s an article written in a New Orleans newspaper regarding John, his story with Hurricane Katrina, and his decision to leave New Orleans with his family.

John has since landed in his hometown of Cincinnati and found a great job at WKRC as their morning meteorologist.
